The University of Sussex is now accepting applications for its 2025 Sanctuary Scholarship, aimed at supporting displaced persons who are unable to access student loans.
The Sanctuary Scholarship provides vital support for students who are forced migrants—such as refugees or asylum seekers—enabling them to pursue undergraduate and master’s degrees at Sussex.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:

Be classified as forced migrants or have been granted a temporary form of leave.

Provide evidence of their migration status.

Hold an offer to study an undergraduate or master’s degree starting in September 2025 at the University of Sussex.

Have submitted (or be a dependent of someone who has submitted) an application to the UK Home Office for recognition as a refugee.

Have been granted a temporary form of leave to remain in the UK as a result of an asylum application.
-
Be a partner/child of an asylum seeker or an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child.
-
Have a household income under £35,000.
-
Be unable to access UK government student financial support due to immigration status.
Courses Not Eligible for the Scholarship
The following programs are excluded:

Certificates and Diplomas (including PGCE)

Courses at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS)
-
Courses at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS)
-
Early Years Education (with Early Years Teacher Status)
-
Degrees in Social Work (if receiving an NHS bursary)

Online courses
-
Schools Direct teaching courses
-
Master’s degrees funded by research councils (e.g., ESRC 1+3 funding)
-
Courses offered at partner institutes, such as the International Study Centre (ISC)
