Ekhagastiftelsen has officially opened its annual call for research applications, inviting scientists and researchers to seek financial support for projects that promote public health and sustainable living.

The foundation, known for its focus on natural medicine and organic systems, is looking for groundbreaking work that aligns with its core mission of enhancing human self-healing capabilities.

Funding and benefits

Successful applicants will join a select group of researchers, with the foundation typically awarding between 15 and 25 grants each year.

While there is no strict cap on individual requests, the organization distributed a total of approximately 30 million SEK in its most recent funding cycle.

The financial support is structured to sustain projects throughout their duration, with payments distributed according to a project’s specific time plan.

It is important to note that 20% of the total grant is reserved and only released once the final project report has been submitted and approved by the foundation’s board.

Application requirements and eligibility

Applicants must submit their proposals through the foundation’s dedicated web-based system, ensuring they include a detailed project description and a summary written for a general audience.

Proposals can be submitted in either Swedish or English, though the foundation notes a slight preference for Swedish to accommodate its scientific advisory council.

A major update for this cycle is the mandatory requirement for a letter of recommendation from a department head or equivalent for all academic institutions.

This signed document must evaluate the applicant’s competence and confirm that the host institution approves of the project’s alignment with existing research lines.

The core of the application is a project description of up to 20 pages that details the scientific hypothesis, methodology, and expected impact on public health.

The foundation places high priority on projects that avoid synthetic drugs and unnecessary animal testing, favoring natural approaches and ecological sustainability.

Researchers outside of Europe are also eligible to apply, though they are strongly encouraged to collaborate with a Swedish research institution.

All projects must additionally align with the United Nations’ sustainability goals to be considered for funding by the board.

Deadline

The application window is strictly limited, opening on April 1 and closing at the stroke of midnight between May 20 and 21 each year. Interested parties are urged to review the instructions carefully and plan for a project start date following the official award announcements in late autumn.
