African AI startups are being invited to join a new six-month initiative aimed at bridging the critical gap between rapid innovation and cybersecurity.
The “Cyber4Africa” programme, launched by the AI Hub for Sustainable Development in partnership with Cisco Kenya and Cyber 4.0, seeks to embed security-by-design into the continent’s growing digital ecosystem.
Organizers emphasize that while AI diffusion is transforming sectors like healthcare and finance, a lack of local cybersecurity infrastructure threatens to erode hard-won public trust.
By focusing on “upstream” interventions, the programme aims to ensure that African innovators are not just participants in the AI revolution, but are building systems that are sustainable, scalable, and globally competitive.
Funding and benefits
Selected participants will receive a structured cybersecurity assessment and a tailored action plan designed for their specific technology stack and sector context.
The programme offers a blend of remote and in-person training, including access to Cisco’s Cybersecurity Training Centre in Nairobi for hands-on technical workshops.
Startups will also benefit from expert-led technical office hours and “AI Security Quick Scans” to strengthen incident response and operational resilience.
Beyond technical tools, the initiative provides a pathway for founders to join a community of practice, positioning them more attractively to institutional partners and global investors.
Application requirements and eligibility
The call is open to Africa-based startups or those building solutions specifically for African markets that have reached the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) stage or beyond.
Applicants must be operating in sectors where data sensitivity is high, such as healthcare, fintech, govtech, energy, or foundational AI infrastructure.
Specifically, the programme targets ventures handling sensitive personal, financial, or operational data where the consequences of system failure are most severe.
Founders must demonstrate the internal capacity to actively engage with the programme’s curriculum and advisory workstreams over its six-month duration.
Deadline
The application window is currently open, with a firm submission deadline of June 8, 2026.
Successful applicants will be notified in time for the official programme kickoff scheduled for July 1, 2026.
Interested founders can submit their applications through the official AI Hub for Sustainable Development portal.
For further inquiries regarding the selection process or curriculum, the Hub can be reached directly via their dedicated support email.
