Postgraduate students with a passion for ecohealth are invited to apply for the 2025 Octavia E. Butler Fellowship Program.

Named in honour of the pioneering science-fiction author and Afrofuturism icon Octavia E. Butler, this fellowship supports students who use storytelling, history, justice, and technology to drive impactful environmental campaigns under the banner of EcoHealth strategies.

The program offers graduate students hands-on experience in climate policy, energy justice, and community-based research.

Fellowship Benefits

Fellowship Responsibilities

Fellows will:

  • Assist with data collection and cost-benefit analysis for climate and energy initiatives

  • Support stakeholder engagement activities including surveys, focus groups, and interviews

  • Conduct policy and program research related to clean energy, workforce development, and climate resilience

  • Develop reports, presentations, and communication materials

  • Participate in community meetings, workshops, and industry events

  • Perform general project coordination and administrative tasks

  • Utilize ArcGIS and other data visualization tools to map geographic and local insights

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a current postgraduate student in public policy, public administration, environmental science, urban planning, sustainability, or a related field.

  • Be proficient in quantitative data tools and analytical methods.

  • Be committed to engaging diverse communities on issues of climate equity, clean energy, and environmental justice.

  • Demonstrate strong research, writing, and communication skills.

  • Be a self-starter, detail-oriented, and comfortable in fast-paced, mission-driven environments

  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and be confident engaging with multi-sector stakeholders
