Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) has officially opened applications for its 2027 Research Residency Program, offering international and local creators a unique opportunity to engage with Tokyo’s cultural landscape.

The program is designed to support practitioners in conducting in-depth research on arts and culture within the city.

A total of five creators will be selected to participate in the program for durations ranging from six to twelve weeks.

The residency periods are scheduled in three blocks between May 2027 and March 2028, covering a wide array of disciplines such as visual arts, architecture, music, and art criticism.

Funding and benefits

Selected participants will be provided with a single living room at the TOKAS residency facilities for the duration of their stay.

This accommodation is intended solely for the participating creator, as the program cannot accommodate family members or partners.

It is important to note that TOKAS does not provide dedicated studio or workspace for this specific residency, nor does it offer direct financial grants or travel support.

Applicants are expected to be self-funded for their research and travel expenses and are encouraged to seek external funding independently.

Application requirements and eligibility

The program is open to experienced professionals of all ages, provided they are not students at the time the residency begins.

Eligibility extends to those who have participated in previous TOKAS residency programs, and artistic duos may also apply if they have a documented history of working together.

Prospective residents must submit a completed application form along with a portfolio and two letters of recommendation from specialists in the fields of art and culture.

For those applying as a duo, the recommendation letters must specifically endorse the partnership rather than the individuals.

All application materials must be uploaded through the official online submission form after downloading the necessary package from the TOKAS website.

Applicants are permitted to apply for other TOKAS residency programs simultaneously, though separate forms are required for each.

Deadline

The window for submissions remains open until June 16, 2026, at 18:00 Japan Standard Time.

Creators with specific questions regarding the process must submit their inquiries through the official form by June 7, 2026, to ensure a response before the final deadline.
