Phileas – The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art has officially launched its call for grant applications, seeking to bring Austrian talent to the global stage in 2027.
This initiative aims to foster creative exchange by supporting high-profile international projects.
Over the past decade, the organization has established a significant track record, funding 154 projects worldwide.
These grants have directly enabled the creation of more than 270 new artworks, marking Phileas as a key player in contemporary art production.
Funding and benefits
Successful applicants will receive financial support specifically tailored to international exhibitions and biennial participations.
Priority is given to solo exhibitions and projects that focus on the production of brand-new artworks, helping artists reach new career milestones.
Beyond direct Phileas funding, partners are encouraged to seek additional public support through the Austrian Federal Ministry of Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport (BMWKMS).
This dual-funding approach ensures that projects have the necessary resources to be both ambitious and sustainable.
Application requirements and eligibility
The call is strictly limited to non-profit art organizations, including museums and biennials located outside of Austria.
Applications submitted directly by artists or commercial entities will not be considered for this 2027 cycle.
Projects must feature Austrian or Austria-based artists, though some restrictions apply to international artists based in Austria who wish to exhibit in their countries of origin.
Each proposal must be submitted in English and include a comprehensive project description along with a detailed budget.
Selection criteria will emphasize artistic and curatorial strength, as well as the international significance of the proposed venue.
Phileas members will also evaluate the feasibility of the project and the institution’s commitment to ecological sustainability.
Deadline
The final window for submissions closes on Tuesday, 15 September 2026. All eligible projects will be evaluated within eight weeks, with the final selection of winners publicly announced in January of the following year.
