With democracy reportedly in retreat across the globe, the search is on for young activists ready to reverse the trend.
The Kofi Annan Foundation and the Democracy and Culture Foundation have officially opened applications for the 2026 Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize, an annual award dedicated to recognizing exceptional leadership in the defense of democratic values.
The prize honors the legacy of the late UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who viewed democracy as a vital “catalyst for better governance, greater security, and human development”.
Organisers are looking for inspiring individuals who have demonstrated a fierce commitment to protecting democratic institutions in their home countries.
Funding and benefits
The top award recipient will receive a $10,000 USD grant and a one-year mentorship with a recognized democracy expert to help scale their impact.
The winner will also travel to Greece to speak at the Athens Democracy Forum, with all travel and accommodation expenses fully covered.
The rewards extend to a total of ten young leaders; the winner and nine finalists will receive full scholarships to attend the One Young World Summit 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa.
This scholarship includes economy flights, private hotel accommodation, and lifelong membership in a global network of over 20,000 ambassadors.
Application requirements and eligibility
To be eligible, candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 30 and possess a proven track record of leadership.
Applicants are required to submit their application in English and include a short video detailing their work in defending democracy and their personal motivations for doing so.
A key requirement is a formal letter of support from a recognised organisation in the field of democracy.
This letter must be written by someone familiar with the applicant’s work, excluding family or personal friends, and must explain how the candidate’s actions have advanced democratic principles.
Submissions will be evaluated by an independent panel based on impact, innovation, and sustainability.
Judges are specifically looking for measurable outcomes, such as policy changes or increased election participation, and projects that are built to last or be replicated in other regions.
Deadline
The application window is currently open, but time is of the essence for those wishing to apply.
All materials must be submitted through the official portal no later than May 17, 2026, at 23:59 BST.
Candidates must be prepared to engage in public activities at both the Athens Democracy Forum and the One Young World Summit should they be selected.
This is a rare opportunity for young leaders to gain international notoriety and connect with past winners to further the cause of human rights.
