For journalists watching the world’s overlooked corners, a critical funding gap is widening as traditional budgets for foreign reporting continue to shrink.

The Postcode Loterij Fonds voor Journalisten is stepping in to ensure that global developments beyond the front pages remain in the public eye.

Managed by Free Press Unlimited, the fund seeks to support independent professionals who want to produce high-quality international reports for Dutch-speaking audiences.

This initiative aims to provide the necessary resources for stories that might otherwise go untold due to a lack of financial means.

Funding and benefits

Successful applicants can receive a grant of up to €4,000 to cover essential travel and accommodation expenses.

It is important to note that these funds are specifically designated for transit and lodging and do not cover daily meals or the journalist’s hourly fees.

Once a proposal is approved and a mandatory security check is completed, the fund provides a fixed payment based on the submitted budget.

While journalists should keep receipts for their own tax records, the fund does not require a final financial justification with receipts after the trip is completed.

Application requirements and eligibility

This opportunity is open to professional journalists who have published or broadcast work in Dutch within the last year.

Applicants must be planning a future trip for a production that targets a broad audience and transcends purely local interests.

To be considered, candidates must provide a letter of intent from a media outlet, preferably one with a large reach, willing to publish the final work.

Applications must also include a detailed budget, a completed Dutch application form, and up to three examples of previous work.

Every submission is reviewed by an independent committee of seasoned journalists who evaluate the quality and social relevance of the pitch.

Applicants can expect a decision via email within a maximum of two weeks following the committee’s review.

Deadline

The fund reviews applications four times a year, with upcoming deadlines on January 30, April 24, August 7, and November 27 (at 12:00 PM.

Completed dossiers should be emailed directly to the program coordinator at younge@freepressunlimited.org to begin the review process.
