Business Finland has officially opened its doors for the 2026 Challenge Competition, inviting industry giants and ambitious growth companies to lead the charge in domestic innovation.

This high-stakes competition aims to spark a surge in research, development, and innovation (RDI) investments across the nation.

The initiative is more than a simple grant program; it is a strategic move to create new jobs and build business ecosystems worth billions of euros.

By targeting major future missions, the competition seeks to cement Finland’s position as a global leader in high-impact technology.

Funding and benefits

A total of €80 million has been earmarked for this latest round of funding, supporting projects that typically last between three and five years.

The financial support is split into two distinct categories based on a company’s global footprint and its capacity for additional investment.

For established global players, funding can reach up to €20 million for the leading firm and an additional €50 million for its ecosystem partners.

Companies showing exceptional commitment to increasing their total R&D footprint in Finland may see these grants boosted to as much as €35 million.

Application requirements and eligibility

The competition is open to companies already operating on a global scale as well as those striving to become international powerhouses.

Growing “challenger” firms can access up to €10 million in funding to solve focused challenges or develop entirely new business openings.

Applicants must propose solutions to significant future missions or major technological hurdles that will directly impact Finland’s national competitiveness.

While the call is not limited to any specific technology, joint projects between two companies are permitted to foster deeper collaboration.

Eligibility extends across diverse sectors, ranging from the bioeconomy and energy transition to quantum technologies and maritime solutions.

Every project must demonstrate a clear path toward significantly enhancing the country’s overall RDI competence and investment levels.

Deadline

This two-phased competition is currently active, but the window for entry is limited.

Applications for the first phase must be submitted through Business Finland’s electronic services no later than Friday, September 11, 2026, at 11:59 PM.
