BrightFocus Foundation is launching a major push for breakthrough Alzheimer’s research, seeking pioneering scientists to tackle the disease’s most pressing challenges.

The foundation’s latest Request for Proposals (RFP) aims to uncover new paths for prevention, understanding, and treatment.

The call is open to both U.S. domestic and international researchers ready to pursue high-risk, high-reward innovations.

This initiative underscores a commitment to fostering creativity by specifically encouraging applications from scientists in underrepresented groups.

Funding and benefits

Successful applicants can receive significant financial backing, with Standard Awards offering up to $300,000 over a three-year period.

These grants provide $100,000 annually to support innovative projects focusing on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

For those in the earlier stages of their research, the Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards provide $200,000 over two years.

This funding is designed to help researchers in their final mentored training stages establish the foundation for an independent research career.

Application requirements and eligibility

The program features distinct tracks tailored to different levels of professional experience.

Postdoctoral candidates must be within five years of their degree conferral, while Early Career Investigator applicants should be within 15 years of receiving theirs.

The Independent Investigator track specifically invites fresh perspectives, encouraging applicants from outside the Alzheimer’s field.

To prioritize innovation, these applicants should not hold an active R01 grant for the same or a closely related topic.

In a major update to the application process, BrightFocus has eliminated the requirement for a Letter of Intent.

Applicants must now move directly to submitting a full proposal to be considered for these highly competitive awards.

Deadline

The application window officially opened on June 1, 2026, and will close on September 1, 2026.

All full proposals must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. EST to be eligible for funding cycles beginning in the summer of 2027.
