The Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) has officially launched its search for the next generation of global strategists through the Fall 2026 edition of its Future Leaders Program.
This prestigious fellowship offers young scholars and recent graduates a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the heart of Hungarian foreign policy research.
Running from September 1 to November 30, 2026, the program requires an intensive in-person commitment at HIIA’s headquarters in Budapest.
Participants will work approximately 30 hours per week, engaging directly with research groups and contributing to strategic analyses on topics ranging from connectivity to global security.
Funding and benefits
Fellows will receive comprehensive professional development, including specialized seminars on leadership, public speaking, and media training.
This mentorship-driven approach is designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and the practical realities of diplomatic discourse, providing access to Hungarian foreign policy circles.
Financially, HIIA engages participants through a three-month, fixed-term contract with payments disbursed upon the successful completion of specific research milestones.
For international fellows residing outside of Hungary, the institute provides additional support covering round-trip travel and a monthly allowance for accommodation costs.
Application requirements and eligibility
The call is open to recent graduates under the age of 30 who hold at least a bachelor’s degree in fields such as International Relations, Political Science, History, or Diplomacy.
Because the program is conducted entirely in English, all applicants must provide proof of English proficiency at a minimum C1 level.
Prospective candidates must submit a complete application package via the institute’s online portal, which includes a maximum two-page CV and a one-page cover letter.
Additionally, applicants are required to provide a writing sample between 3,000 and 5,000 characters to demonstrate their analytical capabilities.
The program focuses on key regional and thematic areas, including the Western Balkans, Transatlantic relations, energy policy, and cultural diplomacy.
Following a review of the written applications, selected candidates will be invited for interviews with HIIA experts in early July.
Deadline
The window for submissions remains open until June 30, 2026, with final results scheduled to be announced by July 31.
This fellowship serves as a premier launchpad for aspiring diplomats looking to shape international discourse from one of Central Europe’s leading think tanks.
