The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) has announced a major initiative to bolster the continent’s scientific capacity, offering up to forty-two (42) early-career research fellowships.

This six-month program aims to provide rising scholars with the time and resources needed to conduct globally competitive research at specialized Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and Africa-Europe Clusters of Excellence (CoREs).

Supported by the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York the initiative seeks to foster socio-economic transformation across Africa.

By pooling resources across a network of peer institutions, ARUA intends to generate a critical mass of knowledge that addresses key challenges in fields ranging from public health to green energy.

Funding and benefits

Successful applicants will receive a comprehensive support package designed to facilitate dedicated research time. This includes a monthly stipend of $2,000, coverage for travel to the host institution, and a modest allowance for accommodation.

In a significant move to bridge the gender gap in academia, ARUA has reserved at least 70% of these fellowships for female candidates.

Additional financial assistance, such as childcare support, is also available to ensure that eligible women can fully participate in the program.

Application requirements and eligibility

The call is open to African nationals who hold a PhD obtained within the last five years.

Candidates should ideally be young faculty or research members at an ARUA university, though eligible researchers from other African institutions are also encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be no older than 35 years at the time of their submission and must demonstrate a highly competitive research track record.

Furthermore, they must be willing to spend the full six months away from their home institution, focusing on a project that aligns with the specific CoE or CoRE to which they are applying.

Deadline

The program offers two distinct windows for participation. For those wishing to begin in March 2026, applications must be submitted by January 22, 2026. Those targeting the second window, starting in September 2026, have until July 15, 2026, to complete their submissions.

To be considered, researchers must submit a digital dossier through the online portal, including a cover letter, a 1,500-word concept note, and evidence of their PhD. Candidates are encouraged to visit the ARUA website to familiarize themselves with the diverse research themes available under this prestigious fellowship.
