Fulbright opens research fellowships for South African scholars

The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Programme offers South African university faculty and research professionals the opportunity to conduct research in the United States for three to nine months. The programme’s goal is to strengthen academic programmes and curricula at South African institutions when scholars return home.

Programme benefits

Successful applicants receive extensive support, including:

  • A monthly stipend (adjusted for the cost of living in their U.S. host city)

  • A one-time settling-in allowance

  • Round-trip airfare

  • J-1 visa sponsorship for the scholar and eligible family members

Who can apply

The programme is open to established professionals and academics who:

  • Are South African citizens or permanent residents with a valid passport.

  • Hold a doctoral degree or equivalent professional experience.

  • Have a strong record of research and publications.

  • Are affiliated with a South African higher education or research institution.

  • Are in good health.

  • Plan to return to South Africa after completing the programme.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online and include:

  • A detailed project statement.

  • A comprehensive CV.

  • Three letters of reference.

  • A letter of invitation from a U.S. host institution (Optional but preferred).
