The British Institute in Eastern Africa invites postdoctoral scholars from East Africa to apply for its Postdoctoral Writing Fellowship Program. This initiative supports researchers in the humanities and social sciences disciplines to develop articles based on their PhD research.
Fellowship Details
Eligible applicants must have completed their PhD within the last two years. Fellows will work independently to prepare their manuscripts for submission to one of BIEA’s affiliated journals—Azania: Archaeological Research in Africa or the Journal of Eastern African Studies.
Participants can choose to work from home, their institution, or the BIEA library in Nairobi. However, BIEA does not provide production, proofreading, or language-checking services; authors are responsible for ensuring the quality of their submissions.
Benefits:
- The writing grant stipend is £1,200 per month for three months, at the end of which the article must be submitted to the relevant journal.
- Applicants must be able to confirm that they are only working a maximum of 15 hours per week in other employment during the time they are receiving the writing grant.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must have completed their PhD and passed their viva before beginning the writing grant.
- Those employed part-time (maximum 15 hours a week) may apply.
- Full-time contract holders are ineligible unless they take unpaid leave for the duration of the fellowship.
- Research must focus on or conducted in one of the 18 Eastern African countries, from Sudan to Mozambique, or relate to the people from this region.
- A reference letter from an academic.
- Applicants must demonstrate the ability to complete their article by January 31, 2026.
