Libido, the sexual drive or desire for sexual activity, is crucial not only to sexual life but also to overall physical well-being. This drive is regulated by essential biochemicals, primarily testosterone and dopamine, produced in the ovaries and brain, respectively. However, lifestyle, beliefs, and various factors affecting hormone production can significantly influence libido, according to sexual health experts.
In June, an anonymous poll conducted on X (formerly Twitter) aimed to uncover the common causes of low libido. The results revealed that 40% of women attributed their low sex drive to stress and anxiety, 20% to relationship issues, and another 40% to medical reasons and hormonal imbalances.
Dr. Osas Iyare, a public health specialist, outlined several key factors contributing to low sexual drive. Medical conditions such as endometriosis and menopause are significant contributors. “As women age, achieving sexual arousal often requires more stimulation. During the ovulation years, when hormones related to egg fertilisation are more active, women typically experience a higher sex drive. As hormone levels decrease with age, so does sexual interest,” Dr. Iyare explained.
Traumatic sexual experiences also play a role in diminishing libido. Women who have experienced rape or negative sexual encounters may find it challenging to engage in intimacy until they have fully rehabilitated. Past trauma can deeply affect sexual desire.
Psychological factors, such as anxiety and depression, also contribute to low libido. Dr. Iyare highlighted that stress, including that induced by economic hardship, can significantly impact sexual desire. “Stress of any form can lead to low libido. When a woman is preoccupied with worries, particularly financial strains or family issues, sex may be the last thing on her mind. Women generally need to feel relaxed and comfortable to be interested in intimacy,” he noted.
Dr. Iyare advised women to communicate openly with their partners to address these concerns collaboratively. He also emphasised maintaining good health through a balanced diet and regular exercise as essential for overall well-being and a healthy sexual drive.
In August, widespread protests in Nigeria underscored the severe economic hardships faced by many, highlighting the broader context of stress and its impact on various aspects of life, including sexual health.
Understanding and addressing the myriad reasons behind low libido is crucial for fostering healthier relationships and overall well-being.
