UP TO $2,000: ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship opens for Africans

With support from the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the African Research Universities Alliance is calling for applications for its Early-Career Research Fellowship program.

The aim of the fellowship is to enhance the capacity of early-career researchers at African universities by providing them with time away from teaching duties at their home institutions to collaborate with highly experienced and distinguished researchers at ARUA Centres of Excellence.

Focus Areas

Energy, unemployment and skills development, non-communicable, diseases, inequality research, notion of identity in Africa, migration and mobility, sustainable, food systems, urbanization and habitable cities, climate and development, good governance, post-conflict societies, water materials, energy & nanotechnology

Funding

–    Each research fellow receives a monthly stipend of US$2,000, modest payment for accommodation, and travel support.

–    Successful candidates will be contracted by ARUA for 6 months.

Responsibilities

–    Work with other researchers to undertake various relevant studies at the Centre under the guidance of an assigned mentor.

–   Write and publish a minimum of one academic paper (a jointly authored paper where the fellow is the first/lead author can be acceptable) in a high-impact journal (at least, indexed in Scopus or Web of Science), with an accompanying policy brief or blog post on the appropriate platforms of the respective host institution.

–    Deliver at least two presentations and participate in technical workshops with fellow researchers and other stakeholders.

–    Assist in creating and bolstering new partnerships between the respective Center of Excellence and other relevant bodies.

–    Assist in disseminating research findings of the center.

Eligibility Criteria

–    You must be a citizen of an African country with a PhD in a discipline/sub-discipline related to the thematic area of the Center of Excellence.

–   You must be within 5 years of completing your PhD.

–    You should be a young faculty (or research) member at an ARUA university (see member universities here). Female postdoctoral fellows will be considered in limited cases.

–    You should not be more than 35 years old at the time of applying.

–    You should have a highly competitive track record relevant to the opportunity and be willing to develop a strong international standing and research reputation.

–     You must be available to spend 6 months away from your home university and be able to return to your home institution.

–    You must be working on an ongoing project related to the CoE and have readily available data to accomplish the main roles and responsibilities.

–     Eligible women are strongly encouraged to apply. At least 70% of the fellowships will be awarded to female candidates.

This program aims to bolster the expertise of early-career researchers in African universities by allowing them to collaborate with experienced researchers at ARUA Centers of Excellence while being free from their home teaching duties.

The fellowship covers various focus areas such as energy, unemployment, disease research, identity, migration, sustainable food systems, urbanization, climate, governance, post-conflict recovery, and material sciences.

Each fellow will receive a monthly stipend of US$2,000, accommodation assistance, and travel support for a six-month tenure.

Fellows are required to work on research projects, publish academic papers, present findings, participate in workshops, and forge new partnerships.

Eligible candidates are African citizens, within five years post-PhD completion, under 35 years, and affiliated with an ARUA member university. Female candidates are encouraged, with 70% of fellowships allocated to women. Applications are due by May 15, 2025.
