Media entrepreneur unveils journalism scholarship for LASU students

Undergraduate students of communication and media studies at the Lagos State University (LASU) are welcome to apply for the Rotimi Sankore Scholarship, recently launched by media entrepreneur Kadaria Ahmed.

Students who are particularly interested in pursuing careers in developmental and data journalism are enjoined to apply for the scheme.

Honouring a media icon

The scholarship is in honour of the late Rotimi Sankore, a prominent Nigerian journalist and advocate  whose influence spanned across radio, print, and the development sector. Sankore was particularly renowned for his data-driven approach to journalism and his commitment to women’s rights. Among his notable achievements include:

– Co-founding the Women’s Rights Project of the Civil Liberties Organisation

– Working with various African women’s groups to promote policy changes

– Developing and adopting the Gender Protocol of the Southern African Development Community (SADC)

– Advocating for the ratification of the African Union’s Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa

– Serving as the Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Development Journalism (ACDJ)

Eligibility Criteria

Interested applicants must:

– Be currently enrolled in LASU’s Communication and Media Studies programme.

– Have completed at least one academic session at LASU.

– Demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.

– Be interested in a future career in developmental and data journalism.

Scholarship Benefits

Selected students will receive funding for :

– Tuition fees.

– Accommodation costs.

Applicants should submit a 200-word personal statement explaining why the selection panel should consider and nominate them.
