The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), in collaboration with the ONE Campaign and the Elliott family, has opened applications for the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling.
The award celebrates emerging African journalists whose work amplifies local voices and highlights the dynamic transformation taking place across the continent.
Focus
This award seeks stories that go beyond headlines, reporting that captures Africa’s growth, challenges, and resilience through authentic, impactful narratives.
It recognises journalists who use their craft to drive understanding, inspire change and give voice to communities shaping the continent’s future.
Eligible entries must have been published between December 1, 2024, and December 1, 2025.
Funding details
The winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a personalised award certificate in recognition of their excellence in storytelling.
In addition, the award offers a two-week internship at The Economist in London, UK, scheduled for June 22 to July 3, 2026.
This provides invaluable exposure to international journalism and mentorship from global media leaders.
Who can apply
The award is open to English-speaking journalists based in Africa working across print, broadcast or online platforms.
Applicants must:
- Have no more than ten years of journalism experience.
- Submit one published piece (print, broadcast, or digital) that showcases Africa through compelling storytelling.
- Provide an English translation if the work was originally produced in another language.
- Demonstrate strong analytical and writing skills, with an emphasis on investigative or explanatory reporting.
Application Requirements
Applicants are to submit a copy of their published story or broadcast clip that best represents their work.
Submissions can include multimedia formats such as web features, videos, podcasts, or visual storytelling projects.
The entry should reflect thoughtful journalism with clear social or community impact.
Selection process
Entries will be reviewed by an international jury—consisting of distinguished media professionals from the US, UK and Africa—based on quality, originality and community impact of each story.
Finalists will be notified by spring 2026.
