The Latvian Literature platform is opening its doors for the next wave of global literary exports, inviting foreign publishers and translators to apply for financial support.

Backed by the Ministry of Culture, the grant program aims to bring the best of Latvian prose, poetry, and children’s literature to international audiences.

Funding and benefits

Publishers looking to bring Latvian voices to their local markets can secure up to 2,000 EUR in financial aid per project.

This funding is specifically earmarked to cover book production costs, including the acquisition of copyrights and printing expenses.

Individual translators also have a clear path to support, with standardized rates provided for their creative labor. The program offers 19 EUR per 1,800 characters for prose translations and 2 EUR per line for those working with poetry.

Application requirements and eligibility

Any foreign publisher operating as a legal entity with a proven track record of working with international authors is eligible to apply.

The initiative seeks to broaden interest in Latvian literature across diverse languages and borders, as seen in the wide range of previously supported projects.

Translators must provide a comprehensive application packet, including a CV, a translation sample, and a letter of intent or contract from a publisher.

Critically, applicants must have already secured a signed agreement with the original work’s copyright holder or representative.

Applications are handled entirely online, requiring candidates to upload the necessary documents in PDF format or as electronically signed files.

Following the submission, applicants should receive a confirmation email within five working days.

Deadline

The current open call for both publishers and translators is strictly scheduled to run from May 5 to May 31.

This biannual contest remains a cornerstone of Latvia’s strategy to promote its cultural heritage to readers worldwide.

Projects approved under this cycle have firm completion targets set for later in the year.

Publishers must finish their work by November 23, 2026, while translators are required to complete their projects by December 8, 2026.
