In a strategic move to bolster global health security, a new funding initiative is targeting the reinforcement of biosecurity and biosafety within healthcare and research laboratories across Africa.

The program seeks to enhance pathogen detection and outbreak preparedness through targeted project support to ensure labs are ready for future biological challenges.

This initiative, known as BIO-GUARD, is implemented by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).

The grants are made possible through generous funding provided by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).

Funding and benefits

Successful applicants can receive a maximum annual contribution of Euro 15,000 for projects lasting up to 24 months.

The funding is specifically designed to support activities that improve the feasibility of strengthening laboratory infrastructures within a clear timeframe.

These funds are reserved for direct project-related costs such as essential laboratory equipment, diagnostic consumables, and technical training for staff.

However, the grant guidelines specify that funds cannot be used for administrative overheads or the salaries of Principal Investigators.

Application requirements and eligibility

Eligibility is primarily restricted to Principal Investigators holding permanent or long-term positions at public health institutes or diagnostic laboratories in eligible ICGEB African Member States.

While the focus is on established member nations, non-member states in Africa may be considered in exceptional circumstances if there is a genuine interest in the biosecurity topic.

A critical component of a winning proposal is the inclusion of international collaboration, which must be a fully integrated feature of the project.

Particular attention will be given to projects that foster new partnerships across borders or address issues of specific regional interest.

All proposals must be submitted electronically through the ICGEB Service Gateway to be considered.

Once submitted, each application undergoes a national review process and must be endorsed by a national Liaison Officer before it is formally acknowledged by the ICGEB.

Deadline

Prospective applicants must submit their complete applications by the fast-approaching deadline of April 30, 2026, at 23:59 CET.

Investigators are reminded that they do not qualify for this round if they have previously awarded projects that have not been satisfactorily concluded and evaluated.
