The Darwin Initiative has officially launched Round 32 of its Capability & Capacity grants, aiming to empower local organisations in the global fight against environmental decline.

This latest funding round opened on May 22, 2026, offering a vital lifeline for projects dedicated to both biodiversity conservation and poverty relief.

Funding and benefits
Successful applicants can secure significant financial support, with grants ranging from £75,000 to £250,000.

These funds are specifically earmarked to bolster the internal strength of local and national entities, including civil society organisations, research institutes, and public bodies.

Beyond immediate financial aid, the program focuses on long-term institutional growth, helping recipients more effectively deliver environmental impact.

Projects are expected to span a duration of one to three years, providing a stable window for organisations to implement sustainable changes and scale their efforts.

Application requirements and eligibility
Prospective leads must demonstrate a clear strategy for enhancing their organisation’s capacity to tackle biodiversity loss while reducing poverty.

Applicants must note that Round 32 features significant changes to geographic eligibility and general guidance compared to previous cycles.

The application process is streamlined into a single-stage format, conducted entirely through the online Flexi-Grant portal.

To assist with the technical requirements, the initiative provides Word templates and specific budget spreadsheets for projects both over and under the £100,000 threshold.

Organisers strongly advise applicants to review the latest guidance documents, as older resources like the July 2024 webinar may no longer reflect current rules. Competition is expected to be intense; recent rounds have seen over 300 applications competing for a very limited number of available slots.

Deadline
The window for submitting applications is strictly scheduled to close on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Due to the high volume of interest, applicants are encouraged to finalise their work plans and budget summaries well ahead of this date.

Final funding decisions are expected by the end of December 2027, with successful projects slated to begin their work on April 1, 2027.

With only approximately 20 projects likely to receive funding this round, the initiative emphasises the need for high-quality, well-prepared submissions.
