Breakthrough T1D is opening new doors for researchers worldwide by launching a series of funding opportunities aimed at tackling the most pressing challenges in type 1 diabetes (T1D).

From advancing islet cell replacement to exploring the clinical meaningfulness of insulin dosing, these grants represent a concerted effort to move closer to a cure.

The organization has updated its research strategy to include a broader scope of studies, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions in both academic and industrial settings.

This call for applications targets early-career scientists, established institutions, and for-profit companies dedicated to T1D breakthroughs.

Funding and benefits

The grant mechanisms are designed to support a wide range of career stages, including Postdoctoral Fellowships and Career Development Awards.

These programs provide the financial backing necessary for researchers to focus on critical areas like cardiovascular health and the underlying mechanisms of autoimmunity.

Beyond academic grants, the Industry Discovery & Development Partnership (IDDP) program offers specialized funding for for-profit organizations.

By combining commercial potential with Breakthrough T1D’s global advocacy and research expertise, this program helps accelerate the transition of new therapies from the laboratory to the patient.

Application requirements and eligibility

In a significant policy shift, applicants for training awards are now eligible to propose human subject research concerning long-term complications, such as diabetic eye, kidney, and cardiovascular disease.

This eligibility extends to interventional trials as well as the analysis of clinical bio-samples or existing data.

Prospective applicants must utilize the RMS360 research management system for all submissions, active award management, and peer-review processes.

Detailed application guidelines, checklists, and administrative terms are provided in the organization’s Grant Handbook, which was updated as of June 2024 to assist applicants.

Deadline

Deadlines vary across the different funding tracks, with several Letters of Intent due throughout late 2025 and early 2026.

For instance, proposals for FY27 Training Awards must be submitted by July 2, 2026, while Round 2 Strategic Research Agreement applications are due May 7, 2026.

Unless otherwise noted, all Letters of Intent and Full Proposals are due by 5:00pm Eastern Time on their respective deadline dates.

Researchers are also encouraged to attend scheduled informational webinars to clarify requirements for specific topics like islet replacement and T1D-on-a-chip platforms.
