The Global Health Foundation Wellcome has issued a major call for mid-career researchers aiming to become the next generation of international scientific leaders.
The Career Development Awards provide a significant platform for those ready to drive innovative programs that could fundamentally shift our understanding of human life, health, and wellbeing.
This initiative is not restricted to traditional laboratory science; instead, it invites bold, creative thinkers from any discipline, including STEM, humanities, and social sciences, to apply.
The goal is to fund transformative work that develops new methodologies, tools, or conceptual frameworks to benefit health-related research worldwide.
Funding and benefits
Successful applicants receive a substantial financial package designed to offer long-term stability, with awards typically spanning eight years.
This extended duration allows researchers the freedom to pursue complex, multi-year projects without the immediate pressure of seeking renewals.
The award covers the lead applicant’s salary if required, alongside comprehensive research expenses.
These eligible costs can include salaries for up to four full-time staff members, laboratory equipment, materials, and essential travel for fieldwork or collaborations.
Beyond the project itself, the funding supports professional growth through dedicated training in leadership and management.
It even provides for ”teaching buyouts” for humanities researchers, ensuring they can focus at least 80% of their time on their breakthrough discoveries.
Application requirements and eligibility
To be eligible, you must be a mid-career researcher who is already driving your own research and has completed at least one or two substantial periods of post-doctoral work.
Applicants must demonstrate they are ready to lead a substantial program that will achieve international standing.
The scheme is open to researchers based at not-for-profit organisations in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and many low- or middle-income countries.
However, please note that researchers based in India or mainland China are currently ineligible for this specific funding stream.
Proposals are judged on three core pillars: the boldness and quality of the research (50%), the applicant’s skills and experience (25%), and the quality of the research environment (25%)
Applications must show how the project aims to deliver a significant advance over existing methodologies or concepts.
Prospective leaders must also secure a sponsor at their host organisation who guarantees the necessary space and resources for the award’s duration.
Furthermore, the administering organisation must commit to providing a permanent contract or a formal career review before the funding ends.
Deadline
The clock is ticking for the upcoming round, with the final deadline for new applications set for July 28, 2026, at 15:00 BST.
Candidates must submit their proposals through the Wellcome Funding platform, ensuring they leave ample time for their host organisation to complete the final approval process.
