The European Union has officially opened submissions for a major grant initiative aimed at strengthening democratic governance and civic engagement in Nigeria.

Titled “Support to Civil Society and Human Rights in Nigeria,” the program seeks to empower local organizations to tackle pressing social and legal challenges.

This call for proposals, registered under reference EuropeAid/186246/DD/ACT/NG, is part of a broader effort to foster a resilient and independent civil society.

It focuses on providing “Action Grants” to projects that can deliver measurable impact on the ground.

Funding and benefits

The European Commission has allocated a total budget of €3,800,000 for this funding cycle.

These funds are intended to provide the financial backbone for initiatives that promote social justice, equality, and the protection of fundamental freedoms across the country.

Successful applicants will receive significant financial backing to implement their projects within the Nigerian geographical zone.

This support is designed not only to fund specific activities but also to enhance the visibility and influence of civil society actors in national discourse.

Application requirements and eligibility

The grant is specifically targeted at organizations dedicated to human rights and civil society development within Nigeria.

Applicants must ensure their proposals align with the EU’s strategic objectives for the region to be considered for the “Action Grants”.

The application process is structured in stages, beginning with the submission of a Concept Note.

Organizations that pass this initial phase will be invited to submit a Full Application, following the detailed guidelines and corrigendum documents updated as of May 22, 2026.

All submissions must be processed through the official EU Funding & Tenders Portal.

It is critical for applicants to review the latest versions of Annex A1 and Annex A2 to ensure their documentation meets the current technical requirements.

Deadline

The window for applications is currently open, but organizations are urged to act quickly to prepare their materials. The final deadline for all submissions is July 6, 2026.
