African Mobility Fellowship for early-career scientists

African early-career scientists studying past global changes can now apply for the African Mobility Fellowship, which is an initiative of the Past Global Changes (PAGES).

The fellowships will be issued between two and four weeks; awardees will be required to take up their fellowship within 12 months of being awarded.

Benefits

The program is intended to support costs associated with international travel and living expenses while abroad—that is, flight (economy class) fares, visa, costs of laboratory consumables (up to max. 10% of the total budget), and accommodation (subsistence and housing) fee for the period of the exchange.

Grantees will receive funds through bank transfer to a bank account provided by them.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants should have completed their PhD thesis/dissertation, or they should be a postdoctoral researcher within five years of completing their PhD (including PhD holders who have not held a postdoc position).
  • They must be a citizen of an African country and be currently studying for their PhD at an African institution.
  • They must be working on a research topic within the scientific scope of PAGES.
  • They should be willing to conduct research in another African institution/country.
  • They must have secured the agreement of the host researcher/institution and provide a confirmation letter from the host researcher/institution as a pre-condition for the award of the fellowship.
  • They must demonstrate that their fellowship will not last for less than two weeks or for more than four weeks within a 12-month period starting from December 31, 2025.

Application  process

  1. Complete the application form.
  2. Submit two letters of recommendation (one from the current academic supervisor at the home institution and one from the supervisor at the host institution).
  3. Submit a CV outlining the major academic and professional achievements (max 2 pages).

  • The preferred language for applications is English; however, applications in French will be accepted.

  • After completing the fellowship, fellows must email a final report in English to PAGES. It should include a financial report, a scientific report and a short article (650 words and one figure) to be published in Past Global Changes Magazine.
