Are you a Nigerian journalist passionate about climate and energy transition stories? Applications are now open for the Climate Reporting Gap Fellowship in Nigeria, an initiative by Surge Africa and One World Media (OWM) to bridge the gap in climate reporting across the country.

This fellowship will support six Nigerian journalists to produce original, data-driven, and solutions-focused stories on climate finance and energy transition, with a strong focus on inclusion and grassroots perspectives.

Whether you work in print, audio, video, or multimedia, this opportunity is tailored to help you deliver impactful journalism that resonates locally and regionally.

What kind of stories Are eligible?

The Fellowship supports a wide range of story formats that explore climate and energy transition issues, including:

  • Political Accountability: Explore the politics behind climate finance and the diplomacy shaping Nigeria’s energy transition. Stories should drive urgency and call for transparency.

  • Reality on the Ground: Amplify grassroots voices by showing how climate change and energy policies affect real people and communities, particularly through social and economic lenses.

  • Data-Driven Reporting: Use climate science, data, and real-life case studies to inform compelling storytelling that brings new insights.

  • Challenges and Solutions: Highlight local struggles, innovative responses, and untold stories that centre communities within the broader climate conversation.

Who can apply?

  • Mid-career and experienced journalists/filmmakers with at least 3–5 years of experience

  • Applicants based in Nigeria, reporting on Nigerian issues

  • No prior background in climate finance required, but applicants should show a clear interest in climate and energy reporting

  • Strong, creative proposals that highlight underreported issues or give voice to those often unheard
