Amid a government clampdown over concerns of fraud, Nigeria’s cryptocurrency sector has been abuzz with praise for a Nigerian crypto trader, Femi Akinola, who returned over $13,000 worth of Solana tokens that had been accidentally transferred to him.

The incident unfolded when Raffy Alvi, a crypto trader, erroneously sent 100 Solana tokens, valued at $14,618, to Akinola instead of the intended $100 worth of the coin. Upon realising the mistake, Alvi reached out to Akinola, asking the latter to keep $1,400 worth of the tokens and return the rest to him. Akinola complied, swiftly returning 90 Solana tokens.

Moved by this noble act, Alvi took to social media platform X to share his experience and thank Femi for his honesty. “I accidentally sent him 100 Solana, and I said, ‘Brother, you can keep 10, just give me back 90.’ And he did it. Lucky sent me back 90 Solana. There is still hope in the crypto community. Thank you so much, Lucky. If you need anything, I got you,” Alvi conveyed in a heartfelt video message.

X users promptly reacted to the post, lauding Akinola for his integrity. Many of the commenters hinted at the significance of the exemplary conduct in countering the prevailing stereotypes about Nigerians. “The fact that he is from Nigeria and still did this should clear the Nigeria stereotype! There are good people everywhere,” one user noted.

Let the world know that there are honest Nigerians who would rather earn an honest living than scam anyone. Kudos to him!,” wrote another.

In his own video, Akinola attributed his decision to return the mistaken crypto funds to his Christian faith. “I cannot keep the money because it is not mine and I am a child of God. We all know that righteousness exalts a nation.”

In the wake of the incident, Akinola, who is a chemical engineering graduate, has seen his X account swell to over 12,000 followers, from 289. He has equally been swarmed with financial donations from the crypto community, charmed by his uprightness.

This act of honesty restores faith in an industry marred by hacks and frauds. Speaking to Cointelegraph, a cryptocurrency media outlet, Akinola hoped that his reports of his action might erase perceptions about the Nigerian crypto population and demonstrate the values of honesty and integrity cherished by many
