A 20-year-old man Garzali Murtala has been remanded in prison custody by a Magistrate Court in Kano State over an attempted rape of a 13-year-old girl.

The suspect was said to have lured the minor into a bush in Rimingado Local Government Area of the State, where he tried to rape her.

And on Tuesday, during the court sitting, the magistrate, Farouk Ibrahim-Umar did not take the defendant’s plea.

The suspect was said to have committed the act on September 21 around 9:am inside a bush along Sulbawa village.

The prosecuting counsel, Ibrahim Arif-Garba, told the court that the offense breached section 95 of the Penal Code that prohibits forced intercourse.

Magistrate Farouk Ibrahim-Umar, however, ordered the police to return the case file to the State’s Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice and adjourned the matter to November 20 for further hearing.

Cases of rape are still prevalent in Nigeria despite the existence of laws like the Child Right Act and the VAPP Act, with stiff punishment prohibiting it.
