To conform to the new Disability Act, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, has appointed Bature Abubakar, a visually impaired, as his technical assistant.

The Act, signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 after nine years of advocacy by disability rights groups, prohibits all forms of discrimination against persons with disability and imposes sanctions, including prison sentences and fines on those who breach it. The Act also stipulates that all public organizations reserve at least 5% of employment opportunities for citizens with disabilities.

A statement by the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities or NCPWD said the appointment was sequel to an appeal to the minister to provide opportunities for citizens with disabilities in the ministry.

The Executive Secretary of NCPWD, James David Lalu, said the appointment shows the Buhari-led administration’s commitment to protecting citizens with disabilities. He, therefore, urged Abubakar to discharge his duties with the highest degree of excellence.

“Your success is indeed our success, and this is significantly enhanced in sharing this triumphant moment with you. It is hoped that you will display the highest sense of professionalism, dedication, patriotism and integrity in the conduct of this important assignment,” Lalu said.
