The Latvian Literature platform is inviting global literary professionals to bring the nation’s stories to the world stage.

New funding rounds for the “Support for Foreign Publishers Publishing Latvian Literature” and the translator grant programs are set to open soon to help broaden the reach of Latvian prose, poetry, and drama.

Backed by the Ministry of Culture, these programs aim to ensure that the best of Latvian literature is accessible and known beyond the country’s borders.

By covering essential production and translation costs, the initiative bridges the gap between local talent and international audiences.

Funding and benefits

Foreign publishers can secure up to 2,000 EUR in financial support to cover specific book production costs.

This funding is strictly earmarked for printing expenses and securing copyrights, providing a significant boost to publishers taking on new Latvian titles.

Translators also have a dedicated path to support, with grants calculated based on the volume of the work.

The current rates are set at 19 EUR per 1,800 characters for prose and 2 EUR per line for poetry translations.

Application requirements and eligibility

To be eligible for the publisher’s grant, applicants must be foreign legal entities with a proven track record of working with international authors.

The program specifically seeks to support works of prose, poetry, journalism, drama, and children’s literature.

Translators are required to submit a comprehensive application package including a CV and a sample translation.

Crucially, they must also provide a signed agreement with the original copyright holder or a contract with a publisher to be considered for funding.

All applications must be submitted online through the platform’s official portal.

Applicants are encouraged to upload their documents in PDF form or as electronically signed files, and they can expect a confirmation email within five working days.

Deadline

Time is of the essence, as the next contest window is only open from May 5 to May 31.

Approved publishing projects must be completed by November 23, 2026, while translation projects have a deadline of December 8, 2026.
