Blue Carbon Plus (BC+), a joint venture between Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy, is calling for innovative partners to scale coastal conservation business models.
The program focuses on “blue carbon” ecosystems, mangroves, seagrasses, and tidal marshes, which are powerful tools in the fight against climate change.
These ecosystems cover only 0.2% of the Earth’s surface but support the livelihoods of 3 billion people.
BC+ seeks to protect these habitats to stabilize the climate while generating economic benefits for local communities.
Funding and benefits
Selected partners currently receive USD 200,000 in grant finance over a one-year period to develop their business models.
The initiative is supported by a $30 million commitment from the Ocean Resilience & Climate Alliance (ORCA), with a final goal of raising $50 million.
Beyond capital, partners receive technical assistance and connections to private sector investors to help their operations grow.
Notably, 85% of donor funding goes directly to ground-level partners to address systemic bottlenecks.
Application requirements and eligibility
BC+ seeks businesses that are scalable, community-centered, and focused on climate impact within specific ecosystems like mangroves or macroalgae.
The program prioritizes projects that integrate local needs with environmental restoration.
Applicants should be committed to sectoral collaboration, sharing knowledge to help create a broader impact across the blue economy.
Successful applicants will enter a co-design phase with the BC+ team to finalize project budgets and strategy.
Deadline
Current open requests for proposals include research on coastal agriculture climate benefits and market analysis for tropical sea cucumbers.
Deadlines for these specific opportunities are May 10, 2026, and May 1, 2026, respectively.
Prospective grantees should apply through the “Opportunities” section of the official BC+ website.
Following the co-design phase, the timeline from full application to fund disbursement is approximately eight weeks.
