The United Nations has launched a worldwide search for “The Heroes of Tomorrow,” seeking individuals and organizations dedicated to building a just and peaceful future.

This annual program, powered by the UN SDG Action Campaign, highlights those working against the odds to drive global progress.

Hosted by the UNDP, this initiative operates as a special project of the UN Secretary-General.

It serves as a prestigious platform to celebrate transformative leaders who turn global challenges into opportunities for sustainable change.

Funding and benefits

Selected finalists will gain access to a tailored program of professional coaching and capacity-building designed to scale their impact.

The program brings together nine finalists from around the world for these unique development opportunities leading up to the awards ceremony.

Winners will be revealed during a high-profile live ceremony on October 29, 2026, in Rome, Italy, which will be broadcast globally via UN WebTV and Italy’s national broadcaster, RAI.

This exposure offers participants an unparalleled stage to share their message with an international audience.

Application requirements and eligibility

Applications are open across three distinct categories: the Changemaker Award for individuals, and the Creativity and Resilience Awards for impactful initiatives.

Individuals can self-nominate for the Changemaker category, provided they demonstrate visionary leadership and measurable results within their communities.

Initiatives applying for the Creativity or Resilience categories must prove they can shift public perceptions or build societal strength against conflicts and climate change.

Past winners include mental health visionaries and human rights defenders who have transformed thousands of lives across dozens of countries.

Deadline

The global call for applications officially runs from April 15 through May 17, 2026.

Prospective applicants must ensure all materials are submitted before the mid-May cutoff to be considered for the 2026 edition.

Following a rigorous internal assessment and due diligence process, finalists will be notified in September 2026.

This remains the premier opportunity for the world’s most persistent changemakers to receive the recognition they deserve on a global stage.
