The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is officially seeking nominations for its 2027 Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility.
This prestigious honor recognizes individuals or organizations, including scientists, engineers, and health professionals, who have championed scientific integrity and human rights under challenging circumstances.
Established in 1980, the award highlights exemplary actions that protect the public’s health, safety, and welfare while ensuring science remains a tool for justice.
Past recipients have been recognized for diverse efforts, from whistleblowing on unethical experiments to protecting the Amazon rainforest or fighting academic bullying.
Funding and benefits
Winners of the award receive a cash prize of $5,000 along with a commemorative plaque marking their achievement.
In addition to the monetary prize, AAAS provides the recipient with complimentary registration for the AAAS Annual Meeting.
The organization also covers full reimbursement for travel and hotel expenses to ensure the winner can attend the ceremony.
Application requirements and eligibility
The award is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. individuals and organizations, provided the nominees are living at the time of nomination.
The selection committee encourages a wide variety of submissions, including those from members of affected communities, students, and human rights activists.
To apply, nominators must complete an online form that includes a brief citation of the accomplishment and a detailed nomination rationale of up to three pages.
Submissions must also include a CV and letters of support, at least one for standard nominations and two for self-nominations.
