The Pulitzer Center has officially launched a special call for journalism proposals that explore the profound and often overlooked intersection of climate change and global labor issues.

This initiative seeks to shed light on how the climate crisis is reshaping economies and exposing workers to significant risks without guaranteed rights or proper conditions.

Pulitzer is looking for ambitious, transformative reporting that challenges the status quo and inspires global action.

Proposals should prioritize centering the voices of vulnerable communities and holding powerful decision-makers to account for their environmental and labor practices.

The call specifically targets three high-priority areas: business accountability in supply chains, the disproportionate climate risks faced by women in the workforce, and community-led adaptation strategies.

While the search is global, the center explicitly welcomes perspectives from the Global South.

Funding and benefits

Selected projects will receive grant funding ranging from USD $5,000 to $15,000, with the exact amount determined by the specific requirements and scale of the proposed reporting.

These grants are designed to support high-impact journalism that reaches diverse local, regional, and international audiences.

Approved budgets can cover essential fieldwork costs, including international or local travel, lodging, and meals.

The funding also accounts for technical needs, such as data analysis, visualization supports, and fees for local translators or reporting partners.

Beyond financial support, successful applicants gain the prestige of being Pulitzer Center grantees, joining a network of world-class storytellers.

Half of the grant is typically paid upon contract signing, with the remainder provided once the principal reporting material is submitted.

Application requirements and eligibility

The opportunity is open to a wide array of media professionals, including staff journalists, freelancers, photographers, and filmmakers of any nationality.

Newsrooms and collaborative teams are also encouraged to apply, provided they designate a clear team lead for the application.

Applicants must submit a 250-word project description, a detailed reporting and publication plan, and a preliminary budget estimate.

Crucially, the proposal must include letters of interest or commitment from credible news outlets to ensure the stories reach a public audience.

Candidates are also required to provide a curriculum vitae, three contemporaneous samples of their published work, and two professional references.

Proposals may be submitted in several languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Bahasa Indonesia.

Deadline

The window for submissions is strictly time-bound, with all applications due no later than March 6, 2026.

Successful candidates will be notified of their selection by March 30, 2026, with the expectation that all funded reports be published by September of that year.
