The McCain Institute has officially opened applications for the 2026 McCain Global Leaders Program, a 12-month fellowship designed for those working “in the arena”.
This initiative aims to identify and support character-driven leaders from around the world who embody Senator John McCain’s legacy of serving a cause greater than oneself.
The 2026 cohort will focus on the global theme of “Advancing Freedom, Defending Rights, Creating Opportunity”.
This theme specifically addresses how younger generations can counter authoritarian actors who use technology and interconnectedness to push back on democratic norms.
To tackle complex global issues, the program employs a regional approach, recruiting leaders from four distinct areas: the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Eurasia, Africa and the Middle East, and Asia and Oceania.
Each region has a specific focus, ranging from inclusive governance strategies to managing great power competitions.
Selected leaders will undergo an intensive curriculum that includes three impactful in-person events enhanced by specialized online learning.
This leadership development framework emphasizes peer-mentoring and group problem-solving while imparting real-world skills needed to meet tomorrow’s challenges.
Benefits
The fellowship is designed to advance each leader’s personal and professional journey by providing access to highly relevant regional and global networks.
Participants benefit from expert-led training and resources intended to assist them as they take on the most difficult challenges in their home countries.
Leaders will participate in a seven-day Leadership Experience in Athens, Greece, followed by a five-day Changemaker Tour in a host country within their respective regions.
These tours provide exposure to the global theme and foster professional collaborations among participants and the Global Advisory Council.
The program concludes with a seven-day Legacy Experience in Vietnam, a country of deep significance to Senator McCain’s own journey.
This capstone event allows scholars to reflect on their evolved leadership philosophies and join a permanent community of program alumni.
Application requirements and eligibility
The recruitment process is competitive and open to leaders who possess a strong track record of service. While there is no strict age requirement, most successful applicants are typically between the ages of 25 and 45.
The Institute emphasizes diversity in terms of gender, ethnicity, disability, political viewpoint, and economic background.
Candidates must have direct experience working on the global theme of defending democracy and be prepared to implement impact projects throughout the program.
Applicants must be able to participate in a non-residential 12-month curriculum while remaining in their home countries.
This structure allows leaders to maintain their current professional roles while applying new skills directly to their local contexts.
Deadline
The application window for the 2026 cohort is currently open for all international candidates. Interested leaders must complete and submit their digital applications through the official McCain Institute portal by March 15, 2026.
