The Open Notebook, a publication dedicated to the craft of science writing, is inviting applications for its Early-Career Fellowship Programme—a part-time, remote opportunity designed to equip aspiring science journalists with the skills and experience needed to thrive in the field.

Running from September to June, the 10-month program pairs fellows with experienced mentors who provide hands-on guidance as participants report and write stories for publication.

In addition to mentorship and byline opportunities, each fellow receives a $6,000 stipend. The programme is especially committed to supporting writers from underrepresented groups in science journalism.

The fellowship is open to individuals at the very start of their professional science writing careers. Applicants must:

  • Have less than three years of regular, professional science writing experience (student work and internships do not count).

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Applicants from any location are welcome.

  • Journalists of colour, indigenous journalists, journalists with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ journalists are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online and must include:

  • A résumé.

  • A cover letter outlining interest in the fellowship.

  • Three writing samples showcasing reporting and writing skills.

  • Three short story ideas suitable for The Open Notebook.
