As part of its effort to enhance education in the country’s capital, FIST Africa, together with Madiba Foundation for Good Governance, has donated furniture and essential supplies to LEA Primary School in Kabusa, Abuja.

The donation follows an earlier visit in which the organization settled the school fees of nine underprivileged pupils and even adopted six children with scholarships to cover their education through tertiary level.

Studying medicine at university had been a lifelong ambition for 7-year-old Yusuf Isa after his father died in a road accident. But his mother could hardly put him through school because of their dire financial straits.

“I almost gave up on my dream of becoming a doctor when my daddy died, and I was sent home from school,” he said.  With a generous scholarship from FIST Africa and the Madiba Foundation, Yusuf can finally fulfil his childhood dream.

“Education is a fundamental right,” said Elizabeth Fred-Adetiba, executive director of FIST Africa. “No child should be denied access to it due to financial constraints. FIST Africa is honoured to collaborate with the Madiba Foundation for Good Governance to contribute to the betterment of LEA Primary School, Kabusa.”

“Madiba Foundation is happy to collaborate with FIST Africa to support LEA Primary School, Kabusa as part of the organization’s education intervention initiative,” said Ozohu Otonoku, Programme Manager of Madiba Foundation for Good Governance.

Thanking FIST Africa and the Madiba Foundation for their generosity, the headmaster of the school, Mr Abubakar Mohammed, noted that the pupils were excited to receive the new furniture and had begun using it. He highlighted further challenges of overcrowding and a lack of computers and photocopiers in the school.

The donation of furniture and supplies represents the first phase of a grand initiative by FIST Africa and the Madiba Foundation with the second phase involving a needs assessment of public primary schools in the federal capital territory (FCT). Research has begun with 158 schools in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
