The police in Lagos have announced the arrest of two women for allegedly trying to sell a two-month-old baby in the state.

In a statement by Benjamin Hundeyin, the state's police spokesperson, the duo were arrested in the Oshodi area of Lagos when passengers in a bus raised alarm after suspecting something sinister was about to happen.

The police statement reads, "Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) successfully foiled an attempt by two women to sell a two-month-old baby. The deal was uncovered in Oshodi when Oge Okolie, aged 25, who was acting as the intermediary, was suspected of stealing the baby. Passengers on a public bus noticed the baby crying continuously while Okolie couldn't breastfeed it as if it were her own child.

“When the situation became tense, the RRS officers intervened to rescue both Okolie and the baby. Further investigations led to the arrest of the baby's mother, Maria Ahmadu, aged 26," the statement reads.

The police say the suspects and the infant to the gender unit of the police command for further investigation.
