About 27 officers of the Nigerian Navy are currently receiving training from the United States Marine Raiders on maritime security, field medical training and counterterrorism.
The U.S. mission in Nigeria tweeted the training details on Wednesday. The mission said the training, currently going on in Lagos, is part of the annual Joint Combined Exercise and Training between the U.S. and Nigerian Special Forces, with “The enduring security partnership between the United States and Nigeria” remaining a key priority.
“[The] U.S. Marine Raiders joined the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service to train 27 officers for 6 weeks, focusing on maritime security, field medical training, and counterterrorism at the Nigerian Navy Town in Ojo, Lagos,” the mission said.
This development is coming at a time security in Nigeria is compromised with the recent increase in violent crimes like sea piracy, kidnapping, banditry, and increased terror attacks.
As the Nigerian Navy is now fully involved in the fight against insecurity in the country, the training is expected to boost its personnel’s experience and result in greater levels of success.
Recall that the chief of naval staff, Auwal Gambo, had, last year, said the “Nigerian Navy is heavily involved in the anti-insurgency, anti-terrorism and the internal security operations across the north.”
