Nigeria’s solutions-focused media outlet, Prime Progress, marks its one year anniversary today.
Prime Progress is an online media that documents how people and groups are solving humanitarian, economic and social problems in Nigeria. It was launched on March 15 last year with the support of the Solutions Journalism Network and the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme.
With Prime Progress, Innocent Eteng, the outlet’s founder, said he wants to “change the negative narrative by mainstream media organisations [local and foreign] who for decades, presented our problems as either hopeless or near hopeless.”
He added that “While I admit that our problems are numerous [from corruption to insecurity to leadership crisis] and sometimes linger unnecessarily, I felt the media overstretch them to the point that their negative news is inflicting emotional burns on citizens.”
Since it launched last March, it has published over 98 articles, including 29 in-depth solutions-focused stories from across the country, 12 of which have made ii into SJN’s Story Tracker.
“For us, it has been an amazing journey working with great journalists to publish great solutions-focused stories and positive impacts across Nigeria,” Eteng said.
“It has also been a beautiful learning experience, as we had the chance to interact, network and collaborate with experts, organisations, and writers from across different countries of the world.”
To mark the anniversary, Prime Progress is having a Zoom chat with its staff writers and contributors today, March 15, 2022, at 9:30 PM (West and Central Africa time).
Eteng said the Zoom chat aims to hint contributors of the outlet’s progress since it launched and to discuss prospects for more collaborations.
