The African Center for Economic Transformation is inviting applications to apply for its Young Leaders in Research (YLR) Grant 2026 cohort, offering a year-long opportunity for early-career African researchers in economics and related disciplines.
The programme seeks to empower young scholars to conduct impactful, policy-relevant research that contributes to Africa’s economic growth and transformation.
Focus and aim of the Young Leaders in Research grant
The Young Leaders in Research grant is designed to strengthen the capacity of young African researchers to produce evidence-based work that informs policymaking.
It prioritizes studies addressing Africa’s economic development challenges while equipping researchers with the mentorship and exposure needed to translate academic findings into practical policy insights.
Funding and benefits
Selected researching young leaders will receive up to $15,000 in research funding, along with mentorship from ACET Senior Fellows, experienced policy researchers across Africa.
Fellows will also benefit from peer learning, networking opportunities, and platforms to publish and present their research, helping to build visibility and credibility in their respective fields.
Who can apply
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be African nationals or hold permanent residency in an African country.
- Be 35 years or younger at the time of application.
- Have completed or be enrolled in a master’s degree or higher.
- Possess an academic background in economics or a related field.
- Demonstrate interest in research through coursework, projects, internships, or volunteer work.
- Show leadership qualities and commitment to Africa’s social and economic transformation.
Application Requirements
Interested candidates must submit:
- A concept note (maximum 800 words) outlining the proposed research topic.
- A statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) explaining motivation and relevance.
- A current CV.
- Two academic or professional references.
- All documents should be compiled and submitted as part of the online application.
