The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), in collaboration with the Nigeria IP Office, invites students across Nigeria to participate in the 2025 National Intellectual Property Essay Competition.

This annual competition aims to deepen awareness of intellectual property (IP) rights and inspire a new generation of creative thinkers, policy shapers, and innovators. It offers students a platform to engage with critical IP-related themes and showcase ideas that could influence Nigeria’s economic and creative future.

2025 Essay Topic:

“IP and Music: Harnessing Nigeria’s Music Industry for Economic Growth”

Participants are expected to critically examine how the creativity of Nigeria’s diverse music ecosystem—when backed by strong IP frameworks—can drive economic development.

Essays should reflect on:

  • The role of artists, producers, and other industry players;

  • Challenges facing IP protection in the music industry;

  • The impact of emerging technologies;

  • And forward-thinking solutions that support long-term, sustainable growth for both the industry and the wider economy.

The competition is open to students currently enrolled in any tertiary institution in Nigeria.

Entry Guidelines:

  • Essays must be written in English.

  • Maximum word count: 1,500 words (excluding references/bibliography).

  • Format: Arial (Black), font size 12, double-spaced, with numbered pages.

  • Submit in both Word and PDF formats.

  • Do not include any identifying information (name, institution, contact details) in the body of the essay.

  • No images or graphical illustrations allowed.

  • Plagiarism and AI-generated entries will result in disqualification.

  • A valid student ID or proof of enrolment must be submitted alongside the entry.

  • Deadline for submission: June 20, 2025.

  • The submission link goes live on May 14, 2025.
