The Water Research Foundation (WRF) is inviting proposals for its new program aimed at connecting climate projections with changes in source water quality.
The initiative seeks research that will help water utilities understand how shifting rainfall, storms, and droughts affect treatment systems and downstream water bodies.
The program focuses on developing tools and frameworks to predict water quality changes and evaluate treatment process responses.
The goal is to give utilities actionable insights, helping them plan system improvements, reduce operational risks, and maintain a safe water supply under changing climate conditions.
Benefits of the climate and water quality link research program
Selected projects will receive up to $250,000 in funding.
Applicants must contribute at least 33% of the total project cost through cost share or in-kind support.
Beyond financial support, participants will gain the chance to develop interactive models, test practical solutions, and share results that can guide water utilities worldwide.
Research expectations
Applicants are encouraged to take a flexible and creative approach.
Projects may include literature reviews, development of predictive frameworks, evaluation of monitoring tools, case studies, and modeling of treatment responses.
Deliverables can include research reports, guidance manuals, workshops, and interactive tools that help utilities link climate predictions with water quality changes.
Who can apply?
Eligible applicants include both U.S.-based and international organizations:
- Educational institutions
- Research organizations
- Government agencies
- Consulting firms
- Other for-profit entities
Applicants with overdue WRF-sponsored projects without approved extensions are not eligible.
Application requirements
Proposals must clearly describe the research approach, timeline, budget, and expected deliverables.
Teams should demonstrate the ability to complete the project within 24 months and show how contributions from applicants and collaborators support the overall goals.
Submissions must be made online via the WRF portal.
Deadline
The deadline for this application is November 20, 2025. Visit the Water Research Foundation website to apply. Explore more global calls on our Opportunities page.
