The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has opened applications for a multi-country programme aimed at strengthening water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems, with a strong emphasis on menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) as a public policy priority.

The initiative supports systemic reforms that expand access to safe sanitation while advancing menstrual health as a critical component of equity, dignity and public health.

Focus

On sanitation, the programme supports participating countries to identify and implement priority reforms needed to achieve universal access.

A central pillar of the initiative is the integration of menstrual health into public policy and systems planning. Key activities include:

  • Strengthening the Global Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) Collaboration.

  • Supporting shared advocacy agendas on menstrual health.

  • Connecting regional and national MHH and WASH networks.

  • Conducting a political economy analysis on menstrual health in Nigeria to inform future policy and investment decisions.

Programme benefits

While this initiative does not offer an open, stand-alone grant, it provides funding and strategic partnership support to strengthen WASH and menstrual health systems.

Selected partners will benefit from:

  • UNICEF-backed investments and technical assistance.

  • Capacity-building support.

  • Participation in national, regional and global coordination platforms.

Engagement also offers increased policy visibility, shared learning opportunities and access to wider donor and financing networks, helping partners deepen impact and unlock future funding opportunities.

Who can apply to partner

Eligible organisations typically include:

  • Civil society and non-governmental organisations.

  • National or regional networks working on WASH or menstrual health.

  • Research and policy organisations with WASH expertise.

  • Organisations experienced in advocacy, systems strengthening or climate-resilient sanitation.

Programme structure

Interested organisations must submit proposals through the UN Partner Portal, in line with UNICEF’s partnership guidelines.

Selected partners will contribute to system-level change, evidence-based advocacy and long-term capacity building aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Deadline

Applications are due on December 29, 2025.
