The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Kenya, has announced the opening of its 2025 funding cycle.
This initiative supports community-led projects that advance environmental conservation and sustainable development at the grassroots level.
The programme focuses on empowering local groups to protect biodiversity, combat climate change, and promote sustainable land and resource management.
What’s on offer
The GEF Small Grants Programme offers financial support of up to USD 100,000 per project for initiatives that deliver measurable environmental and community benefits.
Eligible projects may include:

Climate resilience and adaptation initiatives

Sustainable livelihood and renewable energy solutions
The programme prioritises inclusive and locally driven projects that amplify the roles of women, youth and indigenous communities in environmental action.

Funding is open to the following local and community-based entities:

Indigenous Peoples’ organisations.

Community-based organisations (CBOs).
-
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Other local entities demonstrating community engagement and sustainability focus.
Join the National Steering Committee
In addition to funding applications, the SGP is inviting experts to apply for membership in its National Steering Committee (NSC).
The NSC provides strategic oversight for the programme and is seeking professionals—particularly from the private sector—with expertise in:

Biodiversity and ecosystem restoration.

Renewable energy and climate resilience.

Indigenous rights and community empowerment.
Selected members will play a key role in shaping funding priorities and advancing Kenya’s sustainable development goals.
