The African Union has opened applications for the Kofi Annan Fellowship, a leadership-focused programme designed to strengthen Africa’s public health workforce.

The fellowship seeks to prepare senior public health leaders to advance Africa’s Health Security and Sovereignty Agenda and support the implementation of the New Public Health Order for Africa.

Fellows are expected to contribute directly to policy development, strategic planning and programme leadership that improves public health outcomes across the continent.

The programme targets experienced professionals who are already influencing health systems and are positioned to drive continent-wide transformation.

Programme benefits

Fellows receive comprehensive support for learning and participation, including travel, insurance and daily allowances during residential components.

The programme also provides access to digital learning platforms, residential training resources and specialised software tools to enable effective online and blended learning.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a citizen of an African Union Member State.

  • Hold a postgraduate degree in a public health–related discipline.

  • Have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience after completing a master’s degree.

  • Be employed full-time in a public or private health institution.

  • Demonstrate established or emerging leadership capacity in public health.

Programme structure

The Kofi Annan Fellowship Programme is a professional leadership fellowship, not an academic degree or research grant. It combines digital learning with residential placements, allowing fellows to balance advanced leadership training with practical, real-world application.

The curriculum emphasises leadership development, systems thinking and strategic decision-making in public health.

Application process

Applications must be submitted online and include an employer support letter, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a leadership challenge project proposal.

The fellowship will commence on June 1, 2026, following a competitive and independent selection process.

Deadline

Interested candidates can apply via the African Union website before January 30, 2026.
