Switzerland seeks top talent for fully funded cyber-defence doctoral fellowships

The CYD Campus has opened applications for its CYD Doctoral Fellowships, offering long-term support to PhD candidates pursuing advanced research in cyber-defence.

Successful applicants may receive up to four years of funding, ensuring both financial and academic stability throughout their doctoral studies.

Focus 

The fellowship supports research that addresses critical cyber and digital security challenges. Priority areas include:

  • Confidentiality, integrity and availability of cyber/physical systems

  • Data fusion and secure information sharing

  • Crowdsourcing models for threat detection

  • Use of AI and data science to analyse technology-critical datasets

Projects proposing innovative approaches to security, privacy and trust technologies are particularly encouraged.

Funding details

Awarded fellows receive salary support aligned with the pay scale of their home university, providing steady monthly funding over the course of their PhD.

Additional financial benefits include:

  • Up to $3,500 USD for research equipment.

  • Up to $6,000 USD for conference participation.

These funds enable fellows to acquire technical tools, attend global academic events and share their research with international audiences.

Who can apply

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in a doctoral programme at a Swiss higher education institution.

  • Demonstrate strong academic performance and research potential.

  • Submit a research proposal aligned with CYD’s cyber-defence focus areas.

  • Obtain endorsement from a supervising professor in Switzerland.

  • Include collaboration with CYD Campus researchers as part of the project.

The programme is open to applicants of all nationalities and has no age restrictions.

Application requirements

Applicants must present a well-developed PhD proposal showcasing scientific impact, technical depth and relevance to cyber-defence.

Competitive submissions will include:

  • Strong grade transcripts.

  • Evidence of research or professional experience.

  • A project with clear potential for innovation and measurable contributions to security and data science.
