SPIE, a leading international society for optics and photonics, is now accepting submissions for its annual International Day of Light Photo Contest. Open to photographers around the world, the contest invites both amateurs and professionals to showcase the many ways light influences life on Earth.

Held annually, the contest aims to raise awareness about the International Day of Light and highlight the vital role light plays in cultural, economic, and societal development.

What to Submit

Photographers are encouraged to capture creative and impactful images that depict:

  • The properties of light and its interaction with nature, materials, and the atmosphere

  • Light technologies such as lasers, LEDs, or optical fibers

  • Images made using light-based instruments like telescopes or microscopes

Prizes

Winners will receive the following cash prizes:

  • First Prize: USD $2,500

  • Second Prize: USD $1,000

  • Third Prize: USD $500

  • Judges’ Choice—Best of Science Prize: USD $1,000
