The Rockefeller Foundation has opened applications for its Big Bets Fellowship, a leadership programme designed to support emerging African changemakers developing bold, long-term solutions for underserved communities.

The fellowship invests in leaders working to strengthen systems, scale proven ideas and accelerate regional transformation. It offers a hybrid learning experience that combines expert guidance, strategic collaboration and global exposure.

Priority areas

The fellowship seeks projects capable of sparking breakthrough impact within five to seven years.

Its thematic focus areas include:

  • Renewable energy access

  • Climate and heat resilience

  • Public health

  • Food system transformation

  • Economic inclusion

  • Trade and market system improvements

The programme also highlights the enabling role of artificial intelligence, improved data access, and policy innovation in driving African-led development. Fellows are expected to bring unique insights and strong community engagement to these themes.

Funding details

Selected fellows receive a $5,000 stipend upon signing the fellowship agreement and full travel support to attend the week-long convening at the Bellagio Center.

Additionally, fellows gain:

  • Access to a global network of experts

  • Strategic mentorship

  • A leadership curriculum focused on systems thinking, execution and scale

The programme provides space for reflection, collaboration and refining ambitious, systemic solutions.

Who can apply

The fellowship is open to professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators and community leaders with a strong track record of influence and collaboration across Africa.

Applicants must be available to fully participate in the hybrid programme from May to August 2026.

Qualifications

  • 5 to 15 years of impactful professional, entrepreneurial, or community experience

  • Deep regional engagement and a clear understanding of a major African challenge

  • Demonstrated ability to convene diverse stakeholders and foster cooperation

  • Membership in the Big Bets Community

  • Ability to commit to the hybrid programme format, including the Bellagio convening

  • Projects that show potential for systemic impact within 5–7 years

Requirements

Interested applicants must first complete the Eligibility and Pre-Application Form by the December 1 deadline.

Finalists will later submit a full application in January 2026, including:

  • A reference letter from a senior sector expert.

  • Participation in virtual interviews.

  • A detailed proposal outlining their Big Bet project.
