The CartoGIS Map Competition Awards are now accepting submissions for their annual contest, designed to inspire innovation and creativity in the fields of cartography and geographic information science (GIScience).

The competition celebrates exceptional map designs and novel applications of GIScience, highlighting the power of visual communication and technology across diverse disciplines.

Aim and scope

Entries may represent work in education, professional practice, or research, showcasing how geographic data visualisation bridges art and science.

Ultimately, the goal is to celebrate excellence in both the creative and technical aspects of modern mapping.

Recognition

Winners will receive monetary awards and formal certificates of recognition for their achievements.
Selected map designs may also be featured on the official CartoGIS website and included in related publications, offering participants global visibility for their work and contributions to the field.

Who can apply

The competition features two main tracks to ensure fair evaluation—students and professionals.

Eligible applicants include:

  • Undergraduate students.

  • Graduate students.

  • Recent graduates (within one year of completing their degree).

  • Professionals actively working in cartography or GIS.

How to submit

Each entry must include:

  • The final map (digital or printed format).

  • A 250-word abstract summarising the project.

  • A 3–5 minute video presentation explaining the concept and design process.
